Work Package 4 (WP4) - Hydro-environmental monitoring

The objective of WP4 is the monitoring and assesment of environmental impacts of changes in nutrient inputs and water use on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This can be achieved through:

  • The use of existing timeseries hydro-environmental data with a focus on nutrient and water inputs, as well as administrative practices that will enhance agricultuiral production.
  • The development of a monitoring network of hydro-environmental parameters (surface water/groundwater, soil characteristics land use, hydroclimatic characterestics) within the research area.
  • The monitoring of soil water interaction in the critical zone using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) sensors.
  • The simulation of hydrologic processes within the range of critical zone (surface water, unsaturated zone and groundwater), emphasizing on the modeling of various agrochemical substances and seawater intrusion, as well as the relationship between the former and agricultural production using free and open source software (MODFLOW, SWAT, FARM, MT3DMS, SEAWAT).
